Algebra I
Instructors: Angela Dai and Sarah Xu

During the 7 week course, we will mostly talk about the topics that will be on graphs since that is what students most struggle with in school. Each week, there will be a few practice questions on the homework: it is not required, but still highly recommended. This course is targeted towards grades 5-8, but anyone can follow along.

Algebra II

This class will loosely follow the school curriculum with the point being to prepare and introduce students for BHS’s Algebra 2 H1 class. It is aimed at 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th graders, but anyone with the basics of Algebra 1 down should be able to keep up.

Competition Math

The goal of this class is for students to build problem solving skills in order to improve their scores for middle school math competitions like AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS. This class is well-suited for students with an understanding of basic math topics, students should be looking to challenge themselves from a mathematical standpoint.

Discrete Math

BFL discrete math is an introduction to discrete mathematics. Discrete mathematics is a branch of mathematics that focuses on studying mathematical structures and objects that are distinct and separate, rather than continuous. It provides a foundation for reasoning and problem-solving in various areas of mathematics and computer science.

Precalculus

DESCRIPTION
This is a fun and interactive course for those who want an extra challenge in math. It covers the concept taught in the Belmont High School H1/H2 Precalc curriculum and ends with an intro to concepts that are taught in first semester calculus. The first two lessons serve as a review of the concepts taught in Algebra 2. Intro to Physics

This class serves as a preview of the topics covered in a Honors-level Chemistry class. This class is targeted mainly towards students entering grades 7-10, but any students may follow along. No prerequisite knowledge is needed, but it is recommended to have a knowledge of basic algebra.

This course will provide students with a foundation in computer science through the study of Python, a widely used programming language. The class will cover basic programming concepts, such as functions, loops, and operators. Students will also be able to learn and practice good programming habits such as properly commenting on code, so that they can write clear and coherent code that fellow programmers can easily understand.

This class will give an introduction to biology for beginners by broadly covering the various fields of biology. This class will cover cell biology, genetics, evolution, anatomy & physiology, botany and ecology. Anybody can follow along as there is no required background or prerequisites for this course.

This class will give an introduction to neuroscience for beginners by delving into the BrainFacts book and more advanced content. The syllabus has been updated from last year, so it is possible to learn new content even if you have taken the BFL neuroscience class in 2022. With that said, taking the BFL neuroscience class in 2022 is not a prerequisite as it is completely possible to do well in this course, without having taken the BFL neuroscience class 2022. This class will focus upon neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, disease, changes through aging, histology as well as neuroscience-related technologies.

The Rust programming language is a relatively new language which has recently exploded in popularity. Rust is praised for being more efficient than long established languages such as C/C++ and memory safety.

Creative Writing
Instructors: Scarlett Shi and Wynn Tenhor

DESCRIPTION
Whether you just like to daydream or have forged an intricate web of wizards and dwarfs, if you want to write fiction, this class is for you. We’ll explore the main components of writing fiction and explore different styles and genres. We will cover character design and development, imagery, relationship dynamics, symbolism and more! Students will use these skills to gradually develop their own stories by the end of the session, and will have the opportunity to share and read others’.

Model UN
Instructor: Nari Kang

DESCRIPTION
This foundational course in Model United Nations (MUN) aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of essential MUN principles, including but not limited to effective public speaking, persuasive debate techniques, diplomatic solution formulation, and proficient utilization of parliamentary procedures. Topics below will be following the traditional MUN syllabus.

Microeconomics

​Macroeconomics
Instructors: Christina Xi and Angela Guo

DESCRIPTION
This course follows the AP Microeconomics course but at a more manageable pace, with optional challenging concepts that might or might not be covered based on students' needs. Different from macroeconomics, microeconomics focuses on the study of individual decisions and individual markets, learning about scarcity and supply and demand. It is suggested to take the two courses together as they are taught together at BHS and require similar critical thinking skills.

Chess (Intermediate)

DESCRIPTION
​This class should be perfect for people with some experience playing chess, though you should be able to catch on quickly even if you have never played the game before. We will explore opening principles, essential middlegame ideas, and various endgame patterns. At the end of class, students will be able to participate in a tournament to practice their skills.

​These are one-on-one piano lessons in person. Classes focus on helping students read music and improve their technique. This is mostly intended for beginner piano students with a few months of experience. Available from July to August.
