Algebra I

During the 7 week course, we will mostly talk about the topics that will be on graphs since that is what students most struggle with in school. For each week, there will be a few practice questions on the homework, and they are there for you to practice the material we learned in class. This course is targeted towards grades 5-8, but anyone can follow along.

Algebra II
Instructor: Serena Zhu and Amy Chen

This class will loosely follow the school curriculum with the point being to prepare and introduce students for BHS’s Algebra 2 H1 class. It is aimed at 7th or 8th graders, but anyone with the basics of Algebra 1 down should be able to keep up. ​

Geometry

The Geometry class of 2022, taught by Hannah Insanic and Kian Keyhan is a fun and engaging way to learn the basics and some structured topics of geometry! In this class, we will explore the different specifics in geometry such as definitions, postulates, and proofs. Join us to build on your knowledge of shapes, angles, and much more!

Competition Math (Intro)

This class will focus on building problem solving skills for middle school math competitions like the AMC 8 and Mathcounts. The class is for people who have a basic understanding of math topics and are looking to challenge themselves with math competitions.

This class focuses on developing students’ mathematical thinking and building their problem-solving skills, in addition to serving as AMC 10 preparation. The target audience is students entering grades 7-10 with some competition experience and background knowledge.

This class serves as an introduction to chemistry by giving a brief overview of the topics covered in a first-year honors chemistry course and through real demonstrations. This class is targeted toward students entering grades 7 through 10, but students of all ages can follow along. There are no required prerequisites, but it helps to have an understanding of basic algebra.

Biology (Intro)

Introduction to Biology is a 6/7-week course that covers topics ranging from characteristics of life to molecules of life. Each class following the first will begin with a Kahoot on the previous week’s topics to review, and the course may culminate in a final project (either written or in the form of a slides presentation).

Biology (AP)

From macromolecules to ecology, this class is an introduction to some of the topics you’ll cover in AP Biology! Taught by previous AP Biology students, this class will also give you inside knowledge on the course! This class is geared towards rising juniors who are taking AP Bio in the fall, but high school students are welcome to join, as well as younger students who have taken/are taking Intro to Bio.

Neuroscience

This class will focus upon neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, disease, changes through aging, histology as well as neuroscience-related technologies. Psychology

This class is for anyone who finds psychology interesting! Learn about social experiments, the parts of the brain,  and design your own experiment!  Recommended age is middle school, but students of any age are encouraged to give it a try.

Cryptocurrency

DESCRIPTION
​This class will give an introduction to cryptocurrency and clear up common misconceptions. We will go through the technology and practical use cases that have appeared as the industry has continued to expand and gain adoption. After this the primary focus of a majority of the class will be focused around technical analysis and crypto trading. All grades are welcome but it will probably be easier to follow for grades 7 and above or anyone who already has an interest or background knowledge.
DESCRIPTION
Students will learn how to solve programming problems through Leetcode. Anyone with experience in any language can join because the class will focus on the thought process and not syntax.

Social Studies

​Analytical Writing
Instructors: Scarlett Shi

DESCRIPTION
Don’t be intimidated by the “AP Lang” part of the course title. This class is welcome for students who are at least in 5-6th grade who feel comfortable with writing essays and essay structure. During this seven week course, we will go over the basic essay structure and the AP English Language and Composition exam. Each class will cover a certain portion of the exam with practice problems from past tests.

World History

​This 9-week course serves to introduce the World History Honors curriculum that 9th graders will take at BHS. No prerequisite knowledge is required for this class and all are welcome to attend!

​Creative Writing

DESCRIPTION
Whether you just like to daydream or have forged an intricate web of wizards and dwarfs, if you want to write fiction, this class is for you. We’ll explore the main components of writing fiction and explore different styles and genres. We will cover character design and development, imagery, relationship dynamics and more! Students will have the opportunity to share their stories.

We will discuss some of the most important, and underappreciated, points in history. From the hills of Rome, to the streets of Saigon. Pages of our history that changed the course of Human events forever. Look back on those who lived and died, so that we may today enjoy the world as we know it.

​AP US History
Instructor: Christina Xi

DESCRIPTION
This class will prepare students for the AP U.S. History exam and course. We will cover events and specifics that need to be known on the exam, and tips will be offered on how to take the exam and about the course at BHS. No prior knowledge is required, and this class will help students who will take APUSH gauge the upcoming workload of the course and have a smoother transition into the class. ​

​Model UN
Instructor: Nari Kang

DESCRIPTION
This 2 week introductory Model United Nations course will cover the fundamentals of MUN. From learning parliamentary procedure to speech making to problem solving, students will ultimately develop skills that will allow them to be a successful delegate in Model UN and in everyday life. Over the 2 week course, students will first grasp an understanding of general conference procedure as well as public speaking. From there, the class will simulate a conference-- including all the steps of research, committee in session, and solution making. By the end of this course, students will be proficient in the necessary aspects of MUN which permits them to thrive. ​​

Chess (Intro)

Instructor: Lawrence Tu

DESCRIPTION
Beginner Chess will be taught on Sunday evenings and will go over the basics of Chess. You will be taught the names of all 6 chess pieces, their values and the ways that they move. You will also learn how to identify spots on a Chess board, and learn the three possible results of a Chess game. In this class, you will be taught all the fundamental rules of chess and will be able to demonstrate your understanding by competing with other students. ​

Chess (Intermediate)
Instructors: Alexander Meng

DESCRIPTION
The Intermediate Chess class introduces some basic opening principles, tactical calculation, middlegame planning, and different types of endgames. The class will start with analyzing grandmaster games and end with the chess.com arena. Students will be invited to play in a chess tournament towards the end of the class.

Drawing and Illustration

Instructor: Tina Xu and Vivian Weng

DESCRIPTION
This drawing and illustration course is aimed at deepening your understanding of drawing and sketching, and giving helpful tips on drawing complicated things. A student by the end of the 3 weeks should be able to fully understand color theory and drawing 3D objects, and will have at least 2 finished drawings to present. This class will be held in-person, and an address will be provided to students who sign up.

Art History

Instructor: Renee Zhao

DESCRIPTION
During this eight-week course, I will introduce students to major art periods of western art from the Romanesque period to Modern art. I will explain the key characteristics of each period and how they impacted history. Each day I will be going over a new period, there will be little to no homework, but I will provide additional sources of information to those that are interested in doing more research. At the end of the course, students will be expected to do a project representing their knowledge gained from this course.

Photography

Instructor: Brynner Eang

DESCRIPTION
This course will function as an introductory course to new photographers. This course is made for students in 6th-8th grade, however, it is open to anyone who wishes to become knowledgable about photography. In this course, you will learn the basics of the physical camera, light, and composition. Students are recommended to have a fully functional digital camera. Phones will work but are not recommended, as many classes may be redundant.
