Algebra: Introduction
Instructors: Jason Tang, Derek Chen

description
This class will prepare students well for middle school math. It will cover the fundamental prerequisite topics essential to an exploration of algebra and other higher math. Students should be familiar with basic computational techniques (e. g. long division) as this class will not focus on such computations.

Algebra I
Instructor: Jason Tang

This class focuses on topics in a school course's Algebra I class. The material is suitable for students who are already very comfortable with arithmetic and are hoping to learn more about topics such as systems of linear equations, functions, and factoring.

This class concluded on May 4, 2020.

Algebra II
Instructor: Alice Liu

description
This class will cover most topics in an Algebra II class, which further extends a student’s understanding of previously learned topics and introduces newer topics essential to advancing even further. Because this class builds upon previously learned topics such as systems of equations and quadratics, it is highly recommended that a student already has a good grasp of all math through Algebra I before taking this class.

This class meets on Wednesdays at 4 PM.

AMC 8/10
       Session 1      Session 2
Instructors: Jason Tang (Session 1), Derek Chen (Session 2)

This class focuses on preparation for the AMC 8 and AMC 10 competitions. The material is suitable for students who are hoping to improve at math competitions and have basic familiarity with problem solving and various areas of mathematics. The class will review the basics of various topics and expand to incorporate more advanced concepts and applications.

AMC 8/10 Session 1 concluded on May 9, 2020. AMC 8/10 Session 2 covers a complementary set of topics and meets Sundays at 2 PM.

Cell Biology
Instructor: Yatin Mankan

This class will serve as an introduction to cell biology. We will focus on the makeup of a cell and how each part of the cell functions and works together to keep us healthy and functional. This class will also be introducing DNA, genetics, and walk through protein synthesis and the cell cycle. If you are interested in human biology, this class will be an excellent gateway! No prior knowledge is needed to attend the course.

This class meets on Tuesdays at 2 PM.

Chess
   Beginner: Session 1    2

This class will be an introduction to the game of chess. Students will learn how to play and various strategies that will improve their game. Classes will typically consist of both instruction and lots of opportunities to practice! No prior experience with chess is required. Students will need to make a chess.com account if they do not have one already. 

This class meets on Saturdays.
Section 1: 7 PM to 8 PM
Section 2: 8:10 PM to 9:10 PM

Combinatorics

This class serves as a guide to combinatorial problems in middle school math competitions like Mathcounts and AMC.

Competition Math
Instructor: Alice Liu, Derek Chen, Gabriel Sui

description
This class focuses on preparing students to do well in middle school and high school math competitions like the AMC 8, the AMC 10, and MATHCOUNTS. The class will cover algebra, geometry, and number theory. To learn counting and probability, please head to our Counting and Probability Course. This class is recommended for students in middle school who are interested in math and would like to pursue competitions.

We highly suggest that students arrive with basic knowledge of arithmetic and numbers; however, in order to join, students do not need further experience in algebra or geometry.

Computer Science

This class will cover an introduction to computer science in the coding language Python. It is recommended that students are familiar with arithmetic.

Drawing and Illustration:
       Session 1     Session 2
Instructor: Roger Hauck

description
This class teaches applicable drawing and illustration skills that students can use right away! Each class students will learn one or more techniques and apply them to create a drawing. Classes require little more than a pencil, and an eraser. No prior drawing experience is required; students of all levels are welcome! This class is open to students in grades 2 through 12.

Session One of Drawing and Illustration has concluded. Drawing and Illustration is a continuation of session one. Classes meet on Mondays at 4 PM.

Geometry
         Triangles      Circles
Instructor: Gabriel Sui

description
This class aims to cover most of the triangles portion of a standard geometry class. This class will hopefully teach you about many topics such as similar and congruent triangles, the Pythagorean theorem, and perimeter and area. Problem solving and methods to approach geometry problems will also be learned. Basic algebra and arithmetic knowledge is preferred as some problems will require solving 1 variable equations.

Geometry: Triangles concluded on June 16, 2020. Geometry: Circles is a continuation that covers the remainder of the topics and meets on Thursdays at 4 PM.

Model United Nations
Instructor: Aditya Jain, Jaden Ruan, Hamza Masoud, Alex Yang

This class will cover the basics of Model United Nations, an interactive academic activity that is popular in high schools and colleges around the world. The main aspects of Model UN include public speaking, intensive researching, and persuasive debate about world issues and government policies.  Through this course, students will learn to critically analyze and grow an appreciation for the exciting world of geopolitics.​

This class meets on Fridays at 4:10 PM.

Neuroscience
Instructor: Yatin Mankan

description
This is an introductory level class for anyone with an interest in neuroscience! Students will learn neuroscience basics: how the different parts of the brain work, the function of neurons and other brain cells, and how neurodegenerative diseases work.

Students will not need any prior knowledge of neuroscience to attend this class.

Physics

This class will be a grand tour of physics from the very small to the very large. We begin with the study of atoms and subatomic particles, and will continue through heat, motion, electromagnetism, astronomy, and cosmology.

Prealgebra
Instructor: Derek Chen

description
This class will cover the fundamental prerequisite topics essential to an exploration of algebra and other higher math. This class will also provide a basic introduction to several other fields including combinatorics, statistics, and geometry. Students should be familiar with basic computational techniques (e. g. long division) as this class will not focus on such computations.

Public Speaking

This class will cover the foundations of public speaking and debate such as personal speech habits, structuring a persuasive argument, and even impromptu speeches.  Through this course, students will build solid public speaking fundamentals and grow confident speaking in different settings.  Students of all levels are welcome!

Spelling
Instructors: Richard Deng

description
This class serves as an introduction to spelling. While the primary focus is preparation for Scripps school and regional spelling bees, the concepts involved can also help improve general English and standardized testing skills. Though only students in middle school and younger are eligible for the Scripps competition, the course material is helpful for all ages and levels.

This class meets on Mondays at 2:30 PM.

Volleyball and Yoga
Instructors: Katherine Bai, Saira Licht

During the pandemic, things can get a little tough and boring at home. To take your mind off of troubles and to get you guys up and moving, we have decided to hold a trial class where kids can get active online with each other (you can invite your friends!). We will go through several workout exercises. In addition, if enough people show interest, we will also hold a volleyball session during class where we practice different drills that will prepare you for the future. Both of the moderators are on the Belmont High School varsity volleyball team. We will talk about our experiences on the team, at tryouts, and answer any of your questions about starting school at Chenery or the High School. Being healthy also includes your mental strength and preparation.

This class meets on Sundays at 3 PM.

WWII History
Instructor: Brendan Barry

description
In this class, students will learn and discuss in detail the events of (and leading up to) the Second World War. This class will dive deep into the battles, political struggles, and tactics of the war, from the Siege of Singapore to the Anschluss of Austria. The class will consist of lectures on the topics at hand as well as class discussions. The class will focus on complex topics, but no previous knowledge of World War II is required.​

This class will meet on Thursdays at 3 pm, starting on August 20.
