2020 Classes

Algebra I
Instructor: Jason Tang

This class focuses on topics in a school course's Algebra I class. The material is suitable for students who are already very comfortable with arithmetic and are hoping to learn more about topics such as systems of linear equations, functions, and factoring.

Algebra II
Instructor: Alice Liu

description
This class will cover most topics in an Algebra II class, which further extends a student’s understanding of previously learned topics and introduces newer topics essential to advancing even further. Because this class builds upon previously learned topics such as systems of equations and quadratics, it is highly recommended that a student already has a good grasp of all math through Algebra I before taking this class.

This class meets on Wednesdays at 4 PM.

Algebra: Introduction

This class will cover most topics in an Algebra II class, which further extends a student’s understanding of previously learned topics and introduces newer topics essential to advancing even further. AMC 8/10 Session 1
Instructor: Jason Tang

description
This class focuses on preparation for the AMC 8 and AMC 10 competitions. The material is suitable for students who are hoping to improve at math competitions and have basic familiarity with problem solving and various areas of mathematics. The class will review the basics of various topics and expand to incorporate more advanced concepts and applications.

AMC 8/10 Session 2
Instructor: Derek Chen

This class will focus on AMC 8 and AMC 10 preparation, just like the AMC 8/10 Session 1 class. However, Session 2 will cover a different yet complementary set of topics.

This class meets on Sundays at 2 PM.

Cell Biology
Instructor: Yatin Mankan

description
This class will serve as an introduction to cell biology. We will focus on the makeup of a cell and how each part of the cell functions and works together to keep us healthy and functional. This class will also be introducing DNA, genetics, and walk through protein synthesis and the cell cycle. If you are interested in human biology, this class will be an excellent gateway! No prior knowledge is needed to attend the course.

This class meets on Tuesdays at 2 PM.

Computer Science
Instructor: Jason Yang

description
The instructor for this course will be Jason Yang, who is currently conducting computer science research in MIT PRIMES and has achieved the Platinum division in the USACO. This class will cover an introduction to computer science in the coding language Python. It is recommended that students are familiar with arithmetic.

Drawing and Illustration
Instructor: Roger Hauck

​This class taught applicable drawing and illustration skills that students can use right away! This class focused on techniques that improve the proportions and realism of drawings. Classes required little more than a pencil, eraser, and a ruler. No prior drawing experience was required; students of all levels were welcome!

This class will cover the foundations of public speaking and debate such as personal speech habits, structuring a persuasive argument, and even impromptu speeches. Through this course, students will build solid public speaking fundamentals and grow confident speaking in different settings. Students of all levels are welcome!

Geometry: Triangles
Instructor: Kathy Sui

description
This class aims to cover most of the triangles portion of a standard geometry class. This class will hopefully teach you about many topics such as similar and congruent triangles, the Pythagorean theorem, and perimeter and area. Problem solving and methods to approach geometry problems will also be learned. Basic algebra and arithmetic knowledge is preferred as some problems will require solving 1 variable equations.

Model United Nations
Instructors: Aditya Jain, Hamza Masoud, Jaden Ruan, Alex Yang

This class will cover the basics of Model United Nations, an interactive academic activity that is popular in high schools and colleges across the world. The main aspects of Model UN include public speaking, intensive researching, and persuasive debate about world issues and government policies.  Through this course, students’ main takeaways will learn to critically analyze and grow an appreciation for the exciting world of geopolitics.

Physics
Instructor: Miles Mamigonian

description
This class will be a grand tour of physics from the very small to the very large. We begin with the study of atoms and subatomic particles, and will continue through heat, motion, electromagnetism, astronomy, and cosmology.

Prealgebra
Instructor: Derek Chen

description
This class will cover the fundamental prerequisite topics essential to an exploration of algebra and other higher math. This class will also provide a basic introduction to several other fields including combinatorics, statistics, and geometry. Students should be familiar with basic computational techniques (e. g. long division) as this class will not focus on such computations.

Spelling
Instructor: Richard Deng

description
This class serves as an introduction to spelling. While the primary focus is preparation for Scripps school and regional spelling bees, the concepts involved can also help improve general English and standardized testing skills. Though only students in middle school and younger are eligible for the Scripps competition, the course material is helpful for all ages and levels.

Volleyball and Yoga
Instructors: Katherine Bai and Saira Licht

description
A message from Katherine and Saira: During the pandemic, things can get a little tough and boring at home. To take your mind off of troubles and to get you guys up and moving, we have decided to hold a trial class where kids can get active online with each other (you can invite your friends!). We will go through several workout exercises. In addition, if enough people show interest, we will also hold a volleyball session during class where we practice different drills that will prepare you for the future. Both of the moderators are on the Belmont High School varsity volleyball team. We will talk about our experiences on the team, at tryouts, and answer any of your questions about starting school at Chenery or the High School. Being healthy also includes your mental strength and preparation.

World War II History

This class will focus on a comprehensive and entertaining retelling of the major events of the Second World War. We will go into depth about the battles, political struggles, and tactics of the war, from the Siege of Singapore to the Aschluss of Austria. The class will consist of lectures on the topics at hand as well as large amounts of class participation. No previous knowledge of World War 2 is required.

DESCRIPTION
This class will give students a comprehensive general overview of biology and aims to get students interested in the processes of life. Although this course is aimed at students in sixth grade and up, anybody can follow along and there are no required background or prerequisites (including chemistry) for this course.

​Competition Math

DESCRIPTION
This class focuses on developing the mathematical skills and intuition for middle school level competitions such as Mathcounts and AMC, in addition to general math opportunities and enjoyment. While students of all ages and levels are welcome, the material is primarily directed toward middle school competitions.

Computer Science
Instructor: Kathy Sui

DESCRIPTION
This class is an introduction to the coding language Java, and will cover basics like loops, functions, and classes. Students need a computer and preferably some typing knowledge. Any new students need to go through the setup of Eclipse and Java found in the first class' slides.

​Drawing and Illustration
Instructor: Tina Xu

DESCRIPTION
This course is completely for you to express yourself. This course is completely taught based on your age and your level (which will be “tested” on the first class). Overall, I will teach the basics of drawing, shading, line work, cleanliness, perspectives, textures, and do multiple exercises to develop creativity that would help them with drawing. After the session, you will have at least 6 pieces of work to present. At the same time, if you feel comfortable, a few of the drawings will be eligible for certain art competitions depending on your age or the time, and you can feel free to submit them!

DESCRIPTION
​This course provides an introduction to economics, covering fundamentals such as supply and demand, elasticity, price controls, and consumer choice. This class is geared towards students in grades 5 and above, and no previous knowledge is required - just an interest in the subject and a willingness to participate!

​Finance
Instructor: Joseph Shen

DESCRIPTION
​This class will give students a general introduction to investing and build a strong, widely applicable base. This coursed is aimed to help get students comfortable with investing, a topic rarely taught in schools. This course will cover the basics of the stock market, bonds, and discuss different investment options and strategies. This course is aimed at anyone in Middle School or above. Students should be comfortable with arithmetic and a basic understanding of elementary algebra could be helpful as well.

​Model UN

DESCRIPTION
In this class, we will give an introduction to Model United Nations, a popular academic activity in high schools and colleges worldwide. Model UN is made up of several components, with public speaking, debate, writing, and research at the forefront. In this course, students will gain understanding of how Model UN works, as well as build leadership skills.

DESCRIPTION
An In-Person Crafts class that will be held once or twice a week until school starts - materials will be provided. Classes will be held outdoors with social distancing and masks on.

Writing
Instructors: Cindy Wei and Scarlett Shi

DESCRIPTION
During this eight-week course, we will sharpen students’ essay writing skills and teach them the basic components of strong essay writing. We will also discuss symbolism and various character archetypes: two common devices that exist across the literature. During each day, the instructors will provide the students with resources (PPTs, short stories, exemplar essays, etc.) to help students when completing their homework.

World War I History
Instructor: Brendan Barry

DESCRIPTION
This class teaches an overview of the first Great War, topics span from the western front to the African campaigns encompassing the major events of this global war. Additionally the buildup and aftermath of the war are described, detailing the truly catastrophic repercussions of the Great War. Prior knowledge of history is not required, all are welcome.​
